Playstation Trophies Killzone Mercenary
The sound mixing and graphics in Killzone: Mercenary are top notch, the best for a FPS on the Vita. The sound mixing especially is great hard hitting, with and without headphones. The environments are crisp and clear with good, responsive dialogue that doesn’t get too repetitive – until halfway through the second play through.
What you get with this Killzone spin-off are nine missions that put you firmly in the boots of Danner, a Mercenary working for the ISA in their war against the Helghast. The story is there and not terrible. But, as is the way with first person shooters, the story is forgettable and secondary to the gameplay.
But when you get a good game they are a lot of fun, and the selection of maps on offer makes for fun times and great vengeance on any campers, as there are very few holes to hide in that aren’t weak against some weapon. As you increase in ranking and valour, you also get the opportunity to have more than one load out to choose from when respawning (which is a godsend if you want to change tactics mid-way through a game).
The Call of Duty: Ghosts Season Pass is your access to four epic Map Packs in 2014 at one great price*. Plus, when you purchase the Season Pass, receive the bonus Team Leader Digital Pack, containing a unique MP character head, weapon camo, and other digital items – unlocked in-game at game launch. Once available, download content from the in-game store. PlayStation 3 system Season Pass requires PS3 system Call of Duty: Ghosts game and PlayStation 4 system Season Pass requires PS4 system Call of Duty: Ghosts game sold separately.
Killzone: Mercenary also has an inbuilt medal award and valour system in its career data. Medals are awarded for weapon/vanguard usage, headshots, and level completion (though there isn’t any stacking, so you have to do each contract on each difficulty if you are a completionist). It’s a nice visual tally system to show off to… well, yourself at present.
The missions are nice spurts that take between 10-30 minutes to complete, depending on the difficulty setting. Each mission has four contracts (campaign, covert, precision, and demolition) to play through, where you achieve different skill objectives while playing out the same section of the storyline. This increases the appeal in replaying the game and allows you to purposefully explore the arms inventory at your disposal.
Starting just after the ending of the original Killzone , and revisiting many of the events from the Killzone trilogy, the game puts players in the rugged combat boots of a mercenary named Arran Danner . Danner is a former UCA-soldier who has no qualms about taking on paid contracts from the ISA as well as the Helghast.
Killzone: Mercenary is a first-person shooter in the Killzone series, powered by the stunning Killzone engine. Developed specifically for the PlayStation Vita platform, Mercenary enhances the familiar twin-stick FPS control scheme with touch pad functionality for interesting new gameplay possibilities.
But that won’t be an issue if you’ve played an FPS before, because downed troops always drop a good amount of ammo. You just need to get them down, which brings me to the difficulty levels. There are 3 different difficulty levels: recruit, trooper, and veteran. The veteran difficulty in Killzone: Mercenary is the easiest of all Killzone games I’ve played so far on the hardest difficulty. This is just one of the small considerations that make this a better Vita title; less chance of a rage quit and accidently throwing the Vita against a wall because you keep getting shot by a sniper.
The Blackjack Armoury is a well-designed system, which looks good and is fairly balanced in the weapon strengths – there aren’t any stand out OP side arms. The pricing for them is pretty reasonable too; as you progress, it’s less than 300,000 credits to purchase access to everything, which you’ll probably get playing through the story. Just be careful swapping weapons in and out during missions and replenishing your ammo at the stockpiles; it costs, and you can get carried away.
Comprised of nine single-player missions — each nearly an hour in length — Killzone: Mercenary delivers the full experience in a portable package. Completed missions unlock additional replay challenges, with a host of special objectives to accomplish. The game also boasts a full-fledged multiplayer mode with six maps tailored for eight players and three different game types, including the popular Warzone mode.
First person shooters on the PlayStation Vita are an extremely tricky beast. Being able to offer an enjoyable portable experience that is comparable to the console experience has been something attempted, but not achieved. Call of Duty: Declassified and Unit 13 tried, and were pale, flawed ventures that had horrible controls. But Guerilla Cambridge may have cracked this track record with Killzone: Mercenary .
Killzone: Mercenary makes full use of PlayStation Vita’s considerable input and graphics capabilities. It enhances the familiar dual-stick FPS control scheme with touch controls for actions such as brutal melee, and with tilt controls for accurate sniper aiming. The game even uses the powerful Killzone 3 engine to bring its massive environments and impressive set pieces to life.
